Vegan DHA

Vegan DHA

Introducing the latest addition to our Omega-3 fatty acid range - Vegan DHA. Each serving delivers high levels of DHA (440 mg) sourced from pure algae and is free from any contaminants. Our Vegan DHA supplement is a simple way for vegans and vegetarians alike to source a direct supply of the fatty acid DHA from natural omega-rich algae.

While you can find omega-3 fatty acids in the form of alpha-linolenic acid in a variety of plant-based foods such as flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, and leafy vegetables, the conversion rate to DHA is low. It’s estimated that only 2-5% of alpha-linolenic acid found in these foods are successfully converted to DHA- this is a very low number! That’s why supplementing with DHA alongside is an ideal option for those who do not consume seafood such as vegans and vegetarians. Since the DHA found in fish comes from the algae, we say why not go straight to the source?

So why do we need DHA exactly?

DHA (short for docosahexaenoic acid) is a type of omega-3 fatty acid that plays an important role in cellular function and maintaining brain health, heart health, eye health and helps maintain normal levels of inflammation across the body. DHA is particularly useful for brain health and eye health.

Brain Health

A large proportion of our brain tissue is made up of fat and DHA makes up a significant amount of the fat found in the brain. They keep cell membranes flexible and work closely with EPA to optimise the communication that takes place between brain cells. So it may not come as a surprise to learn that low levels of DHA can impair the brain’s ability to function at its best! Some studies even suggest that loss of DHA can lead to impaired memory and cognitive functions. On the other hand, adequate DHA intake via supplementation has been found to play a protective role by improving learning and memory skills in older adults.

DHA is also essential for foetal brain growth as well as the growth and development of the brain in breastfed infants. Since DHA is a fundamental component to support foetal brain development and healthy brain function in adults, it’s really important to ensure that you’re getting your daily supply of DHA. Our vegan DHA formula is safe to use throughout pregnancy and when breastfeeding.

Eye Health

DHA is the primary structural fatty acid in the retina of the eye that’s required for visual recognition- so if you’re not on top of your DHA intake, your vision could be directly impacted. In fact, DHA plays an important role in normal eye function all throughout life. DHA also contributes to the normal development of the eye in foetuses and breastfed infants.

Our DHA soft gels are a great choice for those with a fish allergy, for vegans, vegetarians, and even for those who dislike the fishy aftertaste of DHA that you typically get from fish oils.
